'Canes erase deficit, edge Titans in OT

The Warwick Vets boys’ basketball team pushed its record to 9-5 on Friday night, erasing a 13-point halftime deficit to force overtime and beat cross-town rival Toll Gate, 54-45.

The Titans, now 8-7, were looking to pull within a half of a game of Vets in the standings in Division III-South. It looked like they were well on their way to doing just that, coming out on fire and stifling the ‘Canes in the half-court on offense to take a 29-16 lead into the break.

But in dramatic fashion, Vets outscored Toll Gate by 22 points after halftime, edging the Titans by 13 in the second half, before running away with the game in overtime.

Vets was led by four scorers in double-figures. Senior forward Kevin Martin scored a game-high 16 points, while point guard Josh Muto scored 12 and Shane Kittila and Israel Thomas scored 10 apiece. Kittila splashed a game-high three 3-pointers in the comeback win for the ‘Canes.

The Titans got a team-high 11 points from Amari Maduro, while Adam Brice scored 10, point guard Austin Giard netted eight and forward Austin Ouimette finished with seven.

Vets’ win created some breathing room in the standings.

Pilgrim will win the D-III-South regular season title with a record of 12-4. Vets will come in second with a 9-5 record and two games remaining, while Toll Gate will come in third with an 8-7 record and one game remaining.

All three will be in the Division III tournament.

The ‘Canes hosted the Paul Cuffee School on Monday night, but results were unavailable at press time. Vets will conclude its season tonight at 7p.m. at Mount St. Charles.

Toll Gate concluded its season at subdivision foe, Chariho, last night, but results were unavailable at press time.
