‘Canes more than holding their own in D-I

The move from Division II to Division I this season has turned out to be a great one for the Warwick Vets’ gymnastics team.

After a perfect 10-0 season last year en route to winning the Division II title, it was unknown how well Vets would fair among D-I competition. It turns out that it has been a seamless transition.

The ‘Canes dropped to 8-2 with a close loss to North Kingstown on Sunday night, but they still remain tied atop Division I.

Vets has been led by defending state champion and senior captain Candis Kowalik, who set a new state record last year and also claimed the regional title on vault, scoring a 9.75.

Head coach Stacy Capone believes that Kowalik will most likely be individual state champion once again this year if she remains healthy.

It has been a successful season thus far for the ‘Canes, but there is still a lot to compete for, as state and individual titles are still up for grabs.

The division championships will be held at Aim High Gymnastics Academy in East Greenwich on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Hawks win divisional meet

The Bishop Hendricken indoor track team won the Suburban Division on Saturday, compiling a team score of 218, blowing away the competition.

West Warwick was a distant second, finishing with a team score of 92.

Pilgrim finished in fourth place, while Toll Gate placed sixth.

The Hawks won all three relays, while Ethan Famiano won the 55-meter hurdles, Lee Moses won the 300-meter run, Jared Boulanger the 600-meter run, Avery Ingegneri the 1000-meter run, Dom Parlato the 1500, Ben Murphy the high jump and Chris Storti the shot put.

Jacob Yang won the weight throw for the Pats, while Austin Asoroona placed first in the 55-meter hurdles.

Toppa, Hopkins to receive honors from Words Unlimited

Multi-sport star, John Toppa, of Bishop Hendricken, has been named the Schoolboy Athlete of the Year by Words Unlimited.

The MVP of the Division I Super Bowl champion Hendricken Hawks, Toppa scored three touchdowns and passed for another in the state title game against La Salle. He led the Hawks to their fifth consecutive state title by passing for 1,115 yards and rushing for 946 yards.

CCRI’s all-time winningest baseball coach, Johnston’s Hopkins has a career record of 354-164-1. Hopkins led CCRI to the 2012 World Series (33-13) and in 2005 the Knights finished 10th in the NJCAA national rankings. CCRI annexed New England Division II championships in 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2012.
