Fresh off a season-opening loss to Cranston West, the Warwick Vets wrestling team earned a tough victory on Monday when it went to Johnston and defeated the Panthers 39-33. Johnston is now 3-2-1, while Vets picked up its first win. Vets also wrestled Westerly, but those results were not available at press time.

The ’Canes were forced to forfeit four matches, but they got strong performances in just about every match they contested. Davin Lourenco, Owen Amirault and George Schmeider registered pins, while Vets also got victories from John Altieri, Nate Colicci and Thomas Galligan. James Golen and Emmanuel Pimental were awarded wins by forfeit.

Vets will now look to continue the winning trend when it wrestles at defending state champion Cumberland today at 7 p.m. After that, the ’Canes will wrestle East Providence and North Kingstown at North Kingstown on Saturday at 9 a.m.
