’Canes right at home in D-II

The Warwick Vets girls’ soccer team’s recent time in Division I was not filled with a lot of positives, especially from a win-loss perspective.

In Division II this year, though, the ’Canes are already turning heads.

Vets is currently 3-0 in D-II, one of two teams in all of D-II with that record and one of three teams that are without a loss. The ’Canes opened the season on Sept. 5 with a 5-2 win over North Smithfield, and followed that up with a 7-0 win over Cranston East last Tuesday and a 2-0 win over Burrillville on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Katelen Pick has not allowed a ball past her since the opener, and Sloan Kinney is leading the way offensively with a goal and three assists. Elizabeth Gemmell and Kat Raposa each have three goals on the year, with Raposa tallying two against East.

Vets will have chance to pad its win total today when it takes on winless Classical.

Just behind Vets in the standings, though, is Pilgrim, which is 2-0-1 and alone in third place in D-II. The Pats are coming off of an 11-1-2 season in 2012 and, despite a coaching change and a huge graduating class, appear to have picked up right where they left off.

The Pats tied defending D-II runner-up Tiverton 1-1 in the first game of the season, but bounced back to beat North Smithfield 2-1 on Tuesday and Classical 4-1 on Thursday. Sophomore Kendra Tantimonico has burst onto the scene in a big way, as she has two goals and two assists. Captains Haley McCusker and Katelyn Vieira have also contributed offensively, with Vieira pacing the team with three goals and McCusker right behind her with two.

Pilgrim will play at Mount St. Charles on Thursday.

Vets and Pilgrim won’t meet in the regular season until October 15, a 3:30 p.m. showdown at Pilgrim.

Sandin, Beltran leading Titans

The Toll Gate boys’ soccer team thought it had a real chance to do some damage in Division II coming into this season.

So far, so good.

The Titans are 2-0-1 in the early going and are in third place in D-II. Standouts Josh Sandin and Jose Beltran have broken out offensively, as they each have four goals in just three games. Sandin scored four times and added two assists in Toll Gate’s two games last week.

Toll Gate knocked off Westerly 4-2 to begin the year, and then beat PCD 4-3 on Tuesday. Facing perennial contender Smithfield on Thursday, the Titans battled to a 2-2 tie. Smithfield and Toll Gate are currently tied in the standings, along with Lincoln. Coventry and Mount sit atop D-II at 3-0.
