’Canes roll past Pats for second win

The Pilgrim and Warwick Vets tennis teams haven’t encountered much success this season, but when the two teams met on Monday, one was going to emerge victorious.

The ’Canes rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Pats behind key victories from seniors Andrew Falaguerra, Trent Mochel and Gabriel Shaker.

Vets won all three matches that were played, as Pilgrim couldn’t fill the other four slots, forfeiting those matches.

But the three that did play for Vets did their part, breezing to a trio of wins to give the ’Canes their second win of the season.

“I’m very happy,” Vets’ head coach Dan Robinson said of his team’s performance. “These three guys are seniors and have been on the team for the past three years. It’s good to see that they could potentially finish their careers on a high note.”

In the No. 1 singles match, Falaguerra was able to hold off Pilgrim’s top player, Jay Chehy, 7-5, in the first set, before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second set to take the match.

Mochel cruised to a win for Vets in the No. 2 singles match, defeating Nathan Thomas 6-0, 6-0.

Shaker also took his No. 3 singles match, edging Pilgrim’s Dylan Pontes 6-2, 6-0.

The loss kept Pilgrim winless at 0-11, while the ’Canes improved to 2-9 on the season.

Vets would go on to lose to East Providence on Tuesday, 6-1, to fall to 2-10, but Robinson feels that his team has continued to progress throughout the season.

“We’re coming along good,” Robinson said. “We only have 10 guys, so it’s tough if someone gets hurt – we’ve had to forfeit some matches along the way. But as for the core group of guys that have been playing, they’ve been doing a good job. Even though we’ve lost more than we’ve won, our matches have been much more competitive than in past years.”

Pilgrim, on the other hand, will look for its first win of the season today at 3 p.m. when it hosts Cranston East.

Vets will close out its season at North Providence today at 3 p.m. It should be a winnable match for the ’Canes, as the Cougars are 3-9 on the season.

Today’s match will mark the final high school match for six Vets’ seniors.

Robinson is hoping that his veteran group can come up with one more win before their careers come to a close.

“North Providence is a good team, so we’ll try to hold our own,” Robinson said. “We’ll see what happens.”
