’Canes topple Patriots in non-league tilt

The Pilgrim and Warwick Vets girls’ lacrosse teams squared off on Wednesday afternoon at Bend Street in a non-league match-up, with the Division II ’Canes flexing some higher-division muscle.

Vets won 17-7, using a balanced attack that featured goals from seven different players. Casey Bennett and Emily Almonte set the pace with five goals each, while Savannah Hersey and Jenna Fontaine both scored two. Nicole Luiz, Ricki Beaufort and Elizabeth Gemmell each added a goal. Shelby Mahoney and Lauren Almonte both picked up assists. Katelen Pick made 14 saves in net.

For the Pats, Haley McCusker accounted for most of the team’s offense with five goals and an assist. Hannah Page scored a goal with two assists, while Paula Cavanagh had a goal as well. Emma Reilly had an assist too, and goalie Makenzie Driscoll made three saves.

The win was the first of the year for the ’Canes, who are 0-1 in Division II. They host Tiverton on Friday at 4 p.m. at Bend Street. Pilgrim, which is 2-0 in Division III, is at Chariho Friday at 4 p.m. (Warwick Beacon photos by Kevin Pomeroy)
