Do you or a family member have diabetes? Do you routinely have your feet screened for complications related to diabetes? If you answered yes to either of these questions or have more questions related to diabetes and/or its diagnosis and management, please join Care New England health system as it kicks off Diabetes Awareness Month and hosts Diabetes Awareness Day.

The event will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kent Hospital Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, located at 455 Toll Gate Road, in Warwick (follow the signs for the main entrance, take a right after the emergency department, then take a left into the first parking lot on the left).

Highlights of the day include: cholesterol, blood pressure, Hemoglobin A1C and diabetic foot screenings. Flu shots will be available, so be sure to bring your insurance card. Care New England physicians and other clinical experts from Butler, Kent, Memorial and Women & Infants hospitals will provide educational seminars on podiatry, complications including neuropathy and ulcers, nutrition and exercise. Vendors will be available to answer questions and provide information for you and your family. There will be plenty of free food and giveaways.

Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Another 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050, unless we take steps to stop diabetes now.
