Carl G. Johnson

Carl G. Johnson, 91, of Shalom Drive, formerly of Johnson Court, West Warwick, died April 14, 2012 at West Shore Health Center, Warwick. He was the beloved husband of Ruth F. (Murdock) Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Feb. 27.

Born in Warwick he was the son of the late Karl J. and Anna C. (Johnson) Johnson and brother of the late Helen V. Spirito. He worked for over 25 years as a draftsman for the Grinnell Corporation. During World war ii he served as a staff Sergeant with the 324th Army Air Corps Base Unit. He was a member of American Legion Post 14, Cumberland, and VFW Post 2274, Ashton.

Carl was very active in freemasonry. He was a 60-year member and past master of Warwick Lodge 16 AF&AM, now affiliated with Mount Vernon Lodge 4, and was a past grand marshal for the Masonic Grand Lodge of Rhode Island. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and of the York Rite as a member of Landmark Chapter, Narragansett Council and Calvary Commandary. He was a member of the Rhode Island Shriners, where he served on the Shrine Charities Hospital Committee, and was a member and past commander of the Legion of Honor. Active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Carl was a 52-year member and past patron of Adah Chapter 15, a member of Martha Washington Chapter 18 and a past grand chaplain for the Grand Chapter of Rhode Island.

He was a member of Phillips Memorial Baptist Church in Cranston and the Providence Engineering Society. Carl was an avid Red Sox fan. His love for bird-watching earned him the nickname “Mr. Audubon.” He also enjoyed fresh water fishing.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service April 17 at 7 p.m. at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick, and may call one hour prior to the service from 6-7 p.m. A private burial will take place April 18 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Warwick.
