Steve Medeiros, president of the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association, talks with Mayor Scott Avedisian at the association’s annual meeting and dinner held Saturday at West Valley Inn. Looking on is association second vice president and fishing columnist David Monti. Avedisian was presented a Public Access Award for his role in having the city acquire 41 acres of Rocky Point shoreline. Medeiros said the park shoreline offers some of the best saltwater fishing in the bay and endorsed plans to build a fishing pier at the park. A Public Access Award was also presented to John Howell, president of the Rocky Point Foundation, for the foundation’s role in lobbying for state acquisition of the remaining 82 acres of the former amusement park. In 2010 voters approved a bond enabling purchase of that land to ensure its preservation as open space.
