‘Cavalcade of Bands’ coming to Rhodes

Posted

The Providence Federal of Musicians union didn’t overstate the case when choosing the name for the spring extravaganza.

It certainly is a “Cavalcade of Bands” – small groups, singers and dancers, a show packed with veterans of some of the most famous swing bands in American music history.

When the first orchestra hits the stage at 6 p.m. on June 23 at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet, reminders of a classier era in music will be heard courtesy of Dan Ferreira and the Meadow Larks. Indeed, some of the Meadow Larks have played with the Dorsey brothers, Dick Jurgens, Buddy Morrow, Johnny Long, Victor Lombardo and Tommy Reynolds.

They have also backed such artists as Bob Hope, Robert Goulet, Wayne Newton, Kaye Starr, Frankie Lane, Al Martino, Ray Conniff and The Four Tops.

Featured vocalists with the Meadow Larks will be Bob Mainelli and Terri Giviens.

The Meadow Larks play a wide variety of musical styles, including hits from swing to contemporary styles.

Steve Bianchi of WBLQ 1230 AM, Bill Melone of WRIU 90.3 FM, and Johnny Nardo of WADK 1540 AM will share emcee duties for the event, and will introduce the following bill of big bands and small groups:

The Tommy Rotondo Group: 5:30 to 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Dan Ferreira & the Meadow Larks: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dance Show by USA Ballroom Dancers, Chapter 1 (directed by Dee Soares): 8:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

New Providence Big Band (directed by Reggie Centracchio, vocals by Katie Klyla): 8:45 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Dixieland Pops (featuring vocalist Patsy Kettell): 5:30 p.m.

Ginny Conley/Bill Moretti group: 6:30 p.m.

Kim Marcoux group: 7:15 p.m.

Rose Weaver group: 8 p.m.

Mary Andrews group: 8:45 p.m.

Calamari Brothers: 9:30 p.m.

Union spokesman Vern Graham, says, “Where can anyone go to see, hear and dance to four big bands and five small bands featuring highly acclaimed regional talent for five hours of continuous music in one of America’s historic dance halls at the low price of $15?”

He adds that the event will offer a chance to sample and savor for five nonstop hours favorites from swing, jazz, dixieland, blues and the Great American Songbook that reigned in the heyday of the Savoy Ballroom and the Cotton Club.

Doors for the spring “Cavalcade of Bands” will open at 5:15 p.m., with dancing from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. More information is available by calling the musicians’ union at 401-941-2717 or visiting promusicri.org. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
