Celebrating a century

Following Saturday Mass, nearly 300 St. Benedict Church parishioners, guests and friends joined in the recently renovated basement room of the former church school, which was dedicated to Father William Lawless, to celebrate the church’s 100th anniversary. The first Roman Catholic Church in Warwick, St. Benedict is considered the “mother church” to many of the parishes that followed including St. Kevin, St. Timothy and St. Rose of Lima. The church had its beginning in 1907, when the Roman Catholic Diocese approved the purchase of property for a chapel to serve the summer community. Seven years later the property where the church stands today was bought. Saturday’s celebration, organized by a committee co-chaired by Lori Earnshaw and Kevin Fielding, included a dinner served on gold plates, music and dancing and, appropriately, toasts and recognition from city and state officials. Mayor Scott Avedisian noted that the church started before Warwick became a city and that it has brought “100 years of Christian witness to Conimicut.” Sen. Michael McCaffrey, who brought greetings from the state, observed that his parents were married at St. Benedict and that he had graduated from the school.
