Cerel celebrates 35th consecutive year entertaining at Warwick Mall

It seems like more than 35 years ago when I hired Warwick native Lon Cerel to put on his magic show for Children’s Sunday at Edgewood Congregational Church. I would run into him at Cub Scout Blue and Gold dinners, local fairs and malls over the years until he went big time, performing his magic tricks, balloon animals, comedy and mind reading at state fairs, malls and big events around the country. For years, he opened for his late friend, Henny Youngman, in New York City and Vegas.

Well, Lon Cerel is back in Rhode Island, and we’re all the richer for it.

Lon is scheduled for nine free performances at Warwick Mall July 26, 27 and 28 at 12 noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. He’ll be doing a half hour show, filled with comedy and magic, aimed at the younger set but to be enjoyed by their parents as well. There’s lots of audience participation in his shows, and he promises to make a balloon animal for every child who attends.

Lon Cerel is great with the kids, but he is also amazing with his adult show. Combining comedy and mind reading, Cerel will dazzle you when he reads your thoughts, using his astonishing mental abilities and intuitive powers.

The Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant is the perfect location for his act, which he calls ESD (Extra Sensory Deception).

“By using my five natural senses to create the illusion of a sixth, I reveal information that is known only to my spectators,” he said. “Not unlike Sherlock Holmes, I can capture people’s thoughts using both verbal and non-verbal communication, psychology and deductive reasoning.”

His performance is filled with laughter and gasps of amazement, as the audience tries to figure out how he does it.

Cerel will perform six matinees on July 10, Aug. 5, Sept. 17, Oct. 22, Nov. 4 and Dec. 10. Doors open at 11 a.m., with the Newport sumptuous buffet beginning at 11:30 and show at 1 p.m. The popular cabaret will follow the show.

Evening performances will be held July 18, Aug. 8 and Dec. 10. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the buffet at 6:30, followed by the show at 8 p.m., with the fun-filled cabaret following the show.

Tickets are $49.95 per person, and we hear they are going fast. This is a popular entertainment for groups as well as individuals, and many senior organizations bus to Newport to enjoy an afternoon or evening of fabulous food and fun.

For reservations and information call 848-7529. There is plenty of free parking. The playhouse is air-conditioned and is located at 102-104 Connell Highway, only minutes from the Pell Bridge and seconds from Newport Grand.
