Mayor Scott Avedisian will join members of Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum to celebrate its inclusion onto the National Register of Historic Places on today at 2 p.m., 4157 Post Road, Warwick. The ceremony will also commemorate the National Historic Preservation Act’s 50th Birthday.

Clouds Hill, originally known as Cedar Hill, was built in 1872 as a wedding gift for Elizabeth Ives Slater on her marriage to Alfred Augustus Reed Jr. The home has since passed through three generations of Slater women, most recently to Anne D. Holst, who is Elizabeth’s great-granddaughter.

The home at Clouds Hill was designed by William Walker & Sons, a notable designer who is credited with designing many Rhode Island buildings, including most of the armories throughout the state and Warwick’s own City Hall. Charles Dowler, who originally came to the United States to produce arms for the Civil War, is credited with carving the intricate fireplace surrounds. In addition to the architecture and the regal interior of the house, there are many family heirlooms, including textiles that date back to the 1870s, porcelain dining sets used by Elizabeth and her family and vintage carriages and wagons from the mid-1800s.

The grounds surrounding the historic home also tout a rich history. Known as the West Bay arboretum, the grounds house more than 70 species of trees and shrubs. In 1985 the home’s name was officially changed from Cedar Hill to Clouds Hill.

“Clouds Hill is truly a historic gem, and one that the City of Warwick proudly houses,” said Avedisian. “Their rich past, breathtaking home and vast grounds offer visitors and invited guests a unique look into the history of our country. I am so pleased that another historic and culturally significant property has been added to the register and will ensure that residents and tourists alike are able to enjoy this piece of history for many years to come.”

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify and protect America’s historical and archeological history.
