The Pilgrim girls’ lacrosse team is officially in a rut.
The Pats lost 17-7 to Chariho on Friday, their second straight loss and third in four games. At 3-3, Pilgrim now has as many losses already as it did throughout all of last season.
Pilgrim is still in second place in Division III-South, trailing 7-0 Chariho, but Friday’s defeat ended its chances at a regular-season division title.
The game also marked a huge change from the first time the two teams met, a tight, 12-11 Chariho victory on April 11. This time, the Chargers jumped out to a 7-3 lead at the half and never looked back en route to the 10-goal win. Jenna Brierly had six goals and two assists to lead the way.
For Pilgrim, Haley McCusker had three goals while Clare Birney, Kelsey Martin, Emma Reilly and Paula Cavanagh scored one apiece.
The Pats have four games remaining in the regular season, three of which will be played on consecutive days this week. They’re at Westerly today at 6 p.m., they host Johnston Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. and they host North Smithfield/Burrillville Thursday at 5:15. Next week, they finish up with a game at Mount St. Charles. (Warwick Beacon photos by Leo van Dijk / rhodyphoto.com)
