Chasing payments to City Hall

To the Editor:

Being a Warwick resident for 40 years, I have seen a lot. This might be the finest example of government incompetence yet.

I paid my water bill on January 30 of this year. As or March 11 my check had not been cashed. Now, I received my next quarterly bill showing I was behind in payment and interest was added to the past due amount.

When I called the Warwick water department I was told that myself and approximately 500 other Warwick residents had the same problem. It seems that any bills paid by bank checks through online bill payments were lost. We sent our payments to a Boston address as told to do. It is unfortunate that our tax money cannot be spent to pay a local person there at City Hall and they would not have to outsource the bills to Boston. I was told I would have to come to the water department along with proof from my bank that I paid my bill on Jan. 30. Also, I have to bring a new check for the amount that was lost by them. This way they would not charge the interest. Because of the inept Warwick bureaucracy I am supposed to take time out of my busy life to deal with their ineptitude.

It was suggested that I contact my Councilman, Mr. Colantuono, but in my experience with writing him in the past I received no response. How is it that the bureaucrats with the cushy government jobs cannot do the simplest things? Like, cash a check!

Based upon past experiences, I now pay all of my real estate, car/truck, and water/sewer taxes at the Annex. I use the drop box. The Boston address is a joke. I, too, made car/truck payments to the Boston address, and it took three months for one of them to clear. No more. Use the Annex drop box.
