Chepiwanoxet sign marks site of aircraft manufacturer

This Saturday, at a 1p.m. ceremony the Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission will unveil a sign on Chepiwanoxet Island with a map of the trails, as well as a history of the Gallaudet Aircraft factory that used to be in that location. The sign is going up to mark the Gallaudet’s 100th anniversary. The company founded in 1915 was one of America’s first aircraft manufacturers.

The corporation dissolved and the building was later destroyed in the 1938 hurricane. Chepiwanoxet Island, which is really not an island, now has trails and wildlife that people can visit and use to conduct research. Wayne Cabral, museum director of Cloud’s Hill, says the site is home to a rare plant and describes it as “one of Narragansett Bay’s true hidden treasures.”

The presentation is open to the public and will include a brief history about the island as well as some words from Mayor Scott Avedisian. The sign cost the city about $200. A majority of the funding and labor has been donated to the commission, Cabral said. The signboard has UV protected glass.
