Chieftains bounce ’Canes with rally

The Warwick Vets baseball team regrouped after a blowout loss in the first round of the playoffs, but the ’Canes met a heartbreaking end anyway. Ponaganset rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning and won 5-4 on a walk-off single in Tuesday’s Division II elimination game.

The ’Canes, who went 9-7 in the regular season, had to hit the road to take on the Chieftains, who finished 10-6 and lost to seventh-seeded Narragansett in the first round, also in blowout fashion.

Vets got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Austin Lamaire, who allowed just two runs in the first six innings. His team gave him the 4-2 lead with a run in the first and three in the fourth.

But the Chieftains rallied. Chris LeBlanc drove in two runs to tie the game before Pat Crino brought home Mike Jason with a walk-off base hit.

Ponaganset moves into the losers’ bracket final of Region 2.

For Vets, the loss brought to a close an up-and-down first season in Division II. At times, the ’Canes looked capable of contending for a title, like when they beat 12-4 Central in the league play finale, but youth and inexperience showed through at other times.

Vets will bid farewell to five seniors – T.J. Boyajian, Pat Delsanto, Tony Lonczak, Andrew Morrissette and Kyle Waters.

Titans buried by unbeaten Lions

The Toll Gate softball team’s playoff run hit a roadblock Tuesday in the form of defending state champion Lincoln. In a Division I winner’s bracket semifinal at Rhode Island College, the Lions blitzed the Titans for 12 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-0 mercy-rule victory.

The Titans came in hot, having knocked off La Salle and Mount St. Charles in their first two playoff games, but the Lions were too much. Lindsay Mayer had a two-run double in the big first inning and also pitched two scoreless frames. Lauren Hervieux went the next three innings and also kept the Titans off the board.

The Titans are still alive in the loser’s bracket of the tournament. They’ll face the winner of Wednesday’s game between East Providence and Westerly, with date and time to be determined.

McCormick, Willet compete at girls’ golf states

Pilgrim’s Casey McCormick and Toll Gate’s Rachel Willet both finished among the top 14 at the girls’ high school golf championship on Tuesday at Point Judith Country Club.

McCormick shot a 107 to finish 13th, while Willet was right behind in 14th with a 109.

Prout’s Nicole Scola won her fourth consecutive championship with an 83.
