The “Friends of the Poor” just got a whole lot richer.

That’s because the Ladies Philoptochos Society held another highly successful Greek Food Fair & Christmas Bazaar last weekend at the Church of the Annunciation in Cranston.

“Without the people who support our bazaar every year, we would not be able to maintain our philanthropic endeavors,” said Georgia Pappas, president of the Greek Orthodox parish’s ladies group. “And ‘Philoptochos’ means ‘Friends of the Poor.’”

“It was again a joint effort by our Philoptochos membership,” she continued. “And again, all the many people who have been coming here enjoying Greek food and pastry and our specialty booths.”

Last weekend’s event – the 44th annual Food Fair & Christmas Bazaar – was highlighted by a special appearance of Cinderella and Prince Charming (Stephanie and John DiSumma), who Pappas said “were a wonderful addition this year, and they made it very special for the children.”

The Taverna, which was chaired by Koula Rougas and Roula Proyous, had many volunteers who came all week and did an outstanding job, especially with the cooking. Likewise, Pappas sent kudos to Nancy Harritos and Angela Provost, who chaired the pastry booth.

Dozens upon dozens of people were impressed with the raffles, jewelry booth, handcrafts, vintage treasures, white elephant, silent auction and even the Agora Greek Market Place, which were all set up inside the Peter G. Mihailides Center at 175 Oaklawn Ave.

“We’re all excited with the results,” Pappas said. “All the money that was raised will now go to the charities such as Special Olympics, Cancer Society, McCauley House, Autism, Ronald McDonald House, Hasbro and many more.”
