‘Cinderella’ opens national tour in Providence

Beth Glover took time out from rehearsals for Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” to talk with me about the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which opens its National Tour at the Providence Performing Arts Center Oct. 10-18.

This version has a contemporary take on the classic fairy tale, with three new songs and a different look at the characters that will make you laugh and delight your senses with its lush production.

“I play Madame, the Wicked Stepmother,” Beth said. “I’m not bad, I’m just misunderstood.”

Beth assured me that all of the elements of the story are still there – the pumpkin coach, the galas slipper, the masked ball, and the wedding – but with some surprising and humorous twists.

“You will be surprised in the best way,” she said. “I love to watch the people watching the play. Everything you expect is there. There’s something for everyone. Adults will catch some of the humor that may go over the children’s heads. This production has one big heart.”

Glover hails from Mississippi, where she attended the University of Southern Mississippi and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

“My dad ran a little theatre in my hometown, so I became involved at a very young age,” she said.

A major in broadcast journalism led to a job with CNN.

“It was a good career, but I saw myself waking up one say, having climbed the ladder, possibly to a vice president position, and asking myself if this is what I really wanted,” she said. “If I don’t try it now, when? My dad was very supportive.”

Beth remembers being in Providence in “Anything Goes” and can’t wait to return and check out the museums and restaurants.

The cast and crew will be in Rhode Island for nearly three weeks between rehearsals and performances, adding thousands of dollars to the local economy, and allowing everyone to unpack and stay put for a while.

Tickets are available for this lavish show, which Beth says is loaded with love and empowerment.

“It’s a breath of fresh air,” she said. “And I will enjoy traveling the country for the next year playing a wonderful character.”

“Cinderella” is at PPAC Oct. 10-18. Tickets are available at the box office and online at www.ppacri.org, or by calling 421-2787. Tickets range from $53-$80.
