The city has acquired 3.5 acres at Passeonkquis Cove, which will be preserved as open space, Mayor Scott Avedisian announced in a release Monday. Through a $26,000 National Heritage Preservation Commission Local Open Space Conservation and Acquisition Grant, with support from the Warwick Land Trust, the city took title to the land through foreclosure.

According to the city, the acquisition, will help further goals outlined in the City’s Comprehensive Plan, including pursuing improved connectivity of parks, open space, recreation land, and water resources with neighborhood and other community destinations; protecting Warwick’s critical wildlife and wildlife habitat; protecting, preserving and enhancing natural resource areas adjacent to developed or potentially developed areas; and working to promote efforts to protect and enhance tree resources.

“Passeonkquis Cove is a beautiful and idyllic piece of Warwick’s natural beauty. By preserving another three and a half acres of open space, we are ensuring that residents and visitors are able to enjoy unobstructed waterfront areas for generation to come,” Mayor Avedisian said in a statement. “I’m proud of the work that our City’s Planning Department, as well the Warwick Land Trust, put into securing more land at the cove.”

“I applaud the Warwick Land Trust and City Planning Department for all of their hard work in applying for and completing this grant,” said Warwick Land Trust Chair, Derek Andersen. “This acquisition is the first of many properties that the Land Trust would love to preserve for the residents of the City. We look forward to continuing our mission of preserving and maintaining open space.”

Open space in the City of Warwick is limited, especially waterfront property. By purchasing the land at Passeonkquis Cove, the City will be able preserve the property, as well as protect the beauty and wildlife it houses. Additionally, The 14 lots associated with this investment by the City are adjacent to land, which was previously preserved as open space, owned by the City and the Audubon Society. A sign is slated to be installed at a later date. Access to the property is available via Passeonkquis Drive.
