City calendar going retro for 2014, photos requested

Jennie’s Ice Cream started the thinking process.

It wasn’t a soft serve cone, although with the heat this summer, that would have been appropriate.

Rather it was a photo of the favorite meeting and eating location in Conimicut that got Mayor Scott Avedisian thinking going “retro” for 2014.

The photo was submitted for the 2013 calendar by Ray Larson. There’s no doubt that it is a vintage 1970 shot of the establishment run for decades by Frank and Victoria Amalfatano. The look of the place and the car say that.

It got Avedisian thinking about the many changes that have happened in Warwick since the ’70s and earlier and how it would be fun for next year’s calendar produced by the Department of Public Works to have a “then and now” theme with pictures of how places looked in the ’70s and what they are today.

The calendar was initiated as a means of providing residents with an easy means of knowing whether recycling crews would be picking up blue or green bins that week. In addition, the calendar provided information on recycling plus other useful information about the city.

When Rhode Island Recourse Recovery launched the mixing of recyclables, the city figured the calendar was no longer necessary. That’s not the way residents saw it. They were attached to the calendar’s local photos and the information it contains.

So, the calendar was spared the budget ax.

In order to reach a broader audience and to celebrate Warwick’s rich history, the city is partnering with the Warwick Museum of Art on the project. The Museum has agreed to promote the call for photographs by reaching out to its artists, patrons and supporters, and plans are in the works for an exhibit of all submitted photographs. More information on the exhibit will be released once details are finalized.

Those with hard copies of photos are asked to submit a print, which will be scanned. Or, photos may be burned onto a CD or disc in tiff, epf or jpeg format.

Photos may be emailed to: sanitation@warwickri.com. (Please note that the subject line should state: calendar photo submission) or may be dropped off at or mailed to: Department of Public Works, attn: Christopher Beneduce, 925 Sandy Lane, Warwick, RI 02889, during normal business hours. Deadline to submit photos is Sept. 15.

Each submission should include a brief description, the name of the photographer, if known (and the person submitting the photo, if they are different), and location of the scene. Names of those whose photos are selected will be included in the calendar.

Questions? Call Chris Beneduce at 738-2000, ext. 6548.

As for Jennie’s, it closed and the property on West Shore Road was developed into Waverly Place, a condominium development.

I think this is a great idea! I only wish I had some photos of Rocky Point! And it's a good idea to get the Warwick Museum of Art involved in the process, too.

Glad to see my photo was instrumental in starting this process. I am hoping to have the entire Jennie's photo series in the upcoming exhibit.
