City crews responded admirably to storm

To the Editor:

I have made several comments lately in private about the life-saving work the members of the police, fire and highway departments and other public works employees did in the aftermath of the worst storm in decades.

The damage it caused was overwhelming and the crews worked around the clock and amazingly no one was hurt or killed. Many of my supporters encouraged me to send a letter-to-the-editor but I didn’t at first. I did not want, and do not want anyone to think I am making these comments “for political reasons.” I’m not.

I have been outspoken about the politics involved but as far as the “people,” there are none better. Without exception, when the emergency happened and we were abruptly slammed by the severe storm everyone jumped to the rescue. Not one city worker hesitated.

Police directed traffic in all the dangerous intersections risking their own safety in the process. Firefighters handled downed, high-voltage power lines that were still live and extremely dangerous, and the highway department reclaimed the streets that the fallen trees made impassable.

I am very grateful to these heroes of Warwick. I am a taxpayer that sometimes has honest issues with the “politics” of Warwick but never with the “people.” The emergency of two weeks ago proves that Warwick’s “people” are the best there are and I admire and respect them greatly for it. I couldn’t do what they did. I couldn’t even come close. I don ’t think any of us could.
