City scavenger hunt aimed at ending homelessness

This June the House of Hope will host its first Warwick citywide scavenger hunt, “Hunt 2 help end Homelessness.”

The family-friendly fundraiser on Saturday, June 27 will have teams competing in challenges taking place all over the city, from answering questions about the city, digging for buried treasure, or picking up clues at some of Warwick’s most famous locations.

The committee for the event is still planning some of the activities for the scavenger hunt, but Christine Foisy, associate director of external relations for House of Hope, said there would be over 100 things to do.

The race will start at 12 and teams of up to five people will have three hours to complete as much as they can from “The Book” for varying amounts of points. The teams racking up the most points wins.

Foisy said until the day of the, not even the House of Hope staff will know what exactly is in “The Book,” or the scavenger list. She assured teams will need a car.

This is the first family-friendly fundraiser the non-profit has hosted, but the team is all very excited Foisy said.

“We wanted to do something that was fun and different that everyone could get involved in. The House of Hope is really about families, and we wanted to do something everyone could get involved in.”

There are a lot of ways people can get involved with the fundraiser. Signing up with a team to participate is one way. The House of Hope is still looking for sponsors for the event as well as site sponsors, who will be a point of interest on the day of the scavenger hunt. Foisy said it’s a quick and inexpensive way for businesses to get publicity from members of the surrounding community.

She said even if a business is just a place to find a clue, “It’s a different kind of PR for businesses. Within five minutes they could see 100 new people.”

The scavenger hunt will also bring up a lot about “Old Warwick” and what “used” to be to leave clues and a way to give directions for participants.

“We are a statewide organization, but Warwick is where we were born and this is a way of celebrating it,” Foisy said,

Although you don’t have to be from Warwick, Foisy said it might be beneficial to have someone who is on your team. The best thing about the scavenger hunt, Foisy said, is that it can be whatever a team wants it to be.

The scavenger hunt can be as competitive as you want it to be. She said it can range from just a fun day with your kids or teams trying to get more points than the other; it’s all welcome.

The House of Hope is getting competitive with itself, too. The staff hopes to raise $1,000 and challenged the board of directors to try and raise more than them.

Registration for one team is $150, but if teams can also fundraise their entrance fee, using crowdraise through the House of Hope, but their registration fee goes up to $160.

For more information or to register a for the scavenger hunt visit www.thehouseofhopecdc.org see the House of Hope’s Facebook page or call Foisy at 463-3324 x23. One team of up to five members is $150, and those teams, up to five members, using crowdraising cost $160.

The June 27 race starts on the steps of City Hall and ends in the parking lot of the Rocky Point Clam Shack. You can also register the day of starting at 11 a.m.
