Upon further research, Pegee Malcom, from the Warwick Historic Cemetery Commission (WHCC), has found that Daniel B. Smith, who Deborah Moorehead claimed was buried at the Peter Freeman Lot by the airport runway, is in fact buried at the Lincoln Lot off of Sandy Lane.
Moorehead, in an Oct. 29 Beacon story, complained about the runway extension project under the assumption she had ancestors in the lot, specifically Mr. Smith, a Civil War veteran.
Daniel B. Smith was born on Aug. 10, 1845 and died Jan. 5, 1883.
Apparently, after his retirement from the Army, Smith married Emmaline Lincoln in 187, having two children, Aldolphus and Daniel Jr.
He was buried with the Lincoln Family off of Sandy Lane. Although the WHCC does not have his headstone, they do have his footstone.
Each Memorial Day Malcolm says she places a flag at his grave.
The runway project will continue with the head and footstones from the Peter Freeman Lot being moved to another location off of Main Avenue recreating the cemetery. The graves themselves will be noted with flat markers with the exact wording of the previous stones. This area will not be paved over.
