Class A title goes to Hendricken; Class B goes to Pilgrim

The Pilgrim girls and Hendricken boys both added to their trophy cases on Saturday, as they each took first place at the outdoor track class championships.

The Pats captured the Class B title with a team score of 146, easily out-pacing second-place Barrington’s 88. The Hawks won Class A, scoring 109.5 points to edge La Salle, which finished with 98.5.

The Toll Gate girls also had an impressive showing, taking third in Class B with 71 points. The Warwick Vets boys’ finished ninth in Class B, while the Toll Gate boys took 12th in the same class.

Pilgrim won five events, led by its usual group of standouts. Senior Rebecca O’Donnell finished in first place in both the long jump and the triple jump, while Emma Landroche won the 100 and the 200 and the team of O’Donnell, Landroche, Nicole Morales and Madison Stanley won the 4x100 relay. O’Donnell also finished second in the 100.

Melanie Brunelle added big points as well, taking second in the triple jump, third in the long jump, third in the high jump and fourth in the 100 high hurdles. Stanley added a third in the triple jump and a third in the 200.

Thrower Maddison Caron was third in the hammer throw and second in the shot put, and Morales took fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 400.

Danika Wayss finished second in the 800 and fifth in the 1500, Bryana Mullin was sixth in the 1500 and Claudia DeMelo was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Alexa Annotti was fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles and sixth in the 100 high hurdles, and Elicia Nemirow was fifth in the javelin throw. Pilgrim’s 4x400 relay team finished in fourth.

Toll Gate’s standouts shone as well. The Titans had four first-place finishes, with Courtney Jacobsen winning the hammer throw, Ani Armenakyan winning the shot put, Erika Pena winning the 100 high hurdles and the team of Pena, Jess Cawley, Morgan Dugan and Nora Hall winning the 4x400. Jacobsen also came in fifth in the discus.

Haley Rouleau added Toll Gate’s next-highest finish, taking second in the pole vault. Alyssa Mathews was fourth in the javelin and sixth in the shot put, Hannah Dubiel was third in the shot put, Vicki Bucci was fifth in the hammer and Jill Eaton was sixth in the discus. Annemarie Martella finished fifth in the 100.

Toll Gate’s 4x800 relay team came in third place.

Hendricken had five first-place finishes to help put it over the top. Alex Cerbo won the shot put, Shane Olson won the javelin, Lee Moses won the long jump and the 100 and Colin Tierney won the 3000. Moses also finished fifth in the 200, and Cerbo finished sixth in the hammer throw.

Other high finishes belonged to Chris Duxbury, who took second in the javelin, Ben Murphy, who took second in the high jump and sixth in the triple jump, Chris Celona, who took third in the hammer throw and Justin Mazzulla, who was third in the triple jump. Nick Stravato was fifth in the 100, Jared Boulanger was fifth in the 800, Jon Celico was sixth in the pole vault and Caleb Wurster was sixth in the high jump.

Hendricken’s 4x1 and 4x4 relay teams took second place, and its 4x8 team finished third.

In Class B, Warwick Vets got 18 points courtesy of a first-place finish from Levi Martin in the high jump and a second-place finish from Jon Nordin in the 200. Max Procopio scored Toll Gate’s only point with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault.

The teams will now gear up for the state championship, which will be held Saturday, June 7.
