Clean car standard comes just in time

To the Editor:

On Wednesday, President Obama announced the biggest step ever taken to end America’s addiction to oil and tackle global warming: a new clean car standard increasing fleet-wide average fuel efficiency for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

With much-needed economic and environmental benefits, this ambitious proposal comes not a moment too soon. The proposed standards would save Rhode Island families $330 per year, and by 2030 would slash nationwide global warming pollution by an amount equivalent to shutting down 70 coal-fired power plants for one year.

Of course, no good deed goes unpunished in Washington these days. The National Auto Dealers Association is lobbying to weaken the new standard, and some members of Congress are vowing to block it altogether.

We cannot miss this tremendous opportunity to help get America off oil and stop global warming. President Obama’s proposal opens up a public comment period to gauge support for these standards. We must show the president that the American people want him to stand firm on this issue by finalizing the rule with the strongest possible standard, without any loopholes.
