The Buckeye Brook Coalition is doing something different this year for its Riding the Tide paddle adventure celebrating Rhode Island Rivers Month. The paddle takes place on Saturday, June 1 starting at 7:30 a.m.

Coalition president Paul Earnshaw and member George Shuster are leading the trip.

“We prefer to do the trip in the early morning where the weather and seas are calm,” said Earnshaw.

The idea of the event is to explore the Conimicut salt marsh and shoreline from Conimicut Point to Rocky Point and back. This trip offers scenic views, education about the local communities, the environment and history.

There has never been a cancellation.

Coalition paddle trips started in 2004. Then, Earnshaw decided to take things up a notch, coming up with new ideas for the event. In previous years, the trip was from Conimicut Point into Mill Cove and up the brook to West Shore Road. This year, it will involve a trip in upper Narragansett Bay, but not too far from shore. The coalition received funding from the RI Foundation to develop paddle guides, available on the website and two permanently located at Conimicut Point.

Pre-registration is required as the trip has a maximum capacity of 20 vessels. Even though this is a non-profit organization, some trips have cost factors so there is usually a jar for donations as people check in. Before the trip there will be a brief talk, introducing the team members, safety tips and expectations.

“We want people with great attitudes and who are willing to learn and experience,” said Earnshaw.

The trip is open to members and the public who have open water experience, basic skills regarding paddling, and who are in good physical condition. A parent or guardian must accompany those under the age of 18.

“We don’t want to put anyone in harm’s way or have rescue situations,” said Earnshaw.

Paddlers will launch from Conimicut Point. The trip will take about two and a half to three hours, approximately a 3.5-mile roundtrip. Those participating are required to bring their own vessel: a canoe or kayak, lifejacket or personal flotation devices, optional safety gear like paddle floats, dry bags to store electronics, suntan lotion, bug spray, water and snacks.

“This is a casual event, not a type of race,” Earnshaw pointed out.

There will be a short 20-minute break after two hours for people to stretch, take a bathroom break or eat a snack.

“We encourage people to get involved. We hope to educate people on Rocky Point and have the citizens of RI participate,” said Earnshaw.
