On the coldest day of the season, students and staff of Gorton Junior High gathered outside the school’s front entrance Wednesday to watch School Resource Officer Nelson Carreiro and Principal Jeffrey Taylor participate in an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. According to English teacher Ady Kayrouz, the school was inspired by a personal narrative written by Angelina Antonizio detailing the struggle her family has endured with her dad’s battle against ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” Never refusing a challenge to help, Carreiro and Taylor stepped up and braved the cold for a good cause. The students of the school also rallied, formed team Cyclones, and raised $350 to be donated to the ALS Association Rhode Island Chapter.
