Colvin resigns as Pilgrim baseball coach

Longtime Pilgrim High School baseball coach Ed Colvin resigned from his post on Sunday, April 28, cutting short his 16th season at the helm.

Colvin cited personal reasons for the decision to resign and declined to comment further.

“I felt it was best at this point,” he said.

Colvin had been the head coach since 1998 and had led the Patriots to nine consecutive playoff appearances.

Pilgrim director of athletics Nick DiFilippo confirmed Wednesday that he received a letter of resignation in an email from Colvin this past weekend. His resignation was effective as of Sunday. Colvin coached his last game on Saturday, a 6-1 non-league victory over St. Raphael.

“He said he felt there were some problems and for personal reasons, he decided to resign,” DiFilippo said.

Mike Xiarhos is taking over the varsity program. Xiarhos has been an assistant baseball coach in the Warwick public school system in the past.

The Pats are 1-7 in league play this season. They lost their first game after Colvin’s resignation 10-0 to Middletown and were scheduled to play Toll Gate on Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time.
