For the second consecutive year, Little League District 3 will send a Warwick-based team to the Intermediate Division regional tournament set in Commack, N.Y.
Warwick Continental, Chariho, North Providence and East Greenwich competed in a regular-season league for the intermediate division, which uses 50/70 dimensions, as opposed to Little League’s 46/60. The league then created two all-star teams with a mix of players from each team, and they squared off this week for the state championship at Continental. The team coached by Al Mann, Dave Massee and Jay Stavastano, which features eight Continental players, three from Chariho and two from North Providence, captured the title with a sweep of the three-game series.
Team members are: Ryan Clary, Mark DeCataldo, Luke Elson, Jarred Favino, Bellamy Gutierrez, Michael Macchioni, Michael Negri, Robert Petrarca, Pete Pimental, Justin Savastano, Alexander Sinapi and William Waggoner.
The team will now head to regionals, where Mann took a team of Warwick players last year. They faced stiff competition from the Mid-Atlantic region, where 50/70 baseball has taken off, and Mann expects more of the same this year.
“Our goal is to win two games and see where that takes us,” he said.
The team departs on July 18.
