The Warwick Continental 9/10-year-old all stars are playing host to the state tournament but couldn’t quite make themselves at home in their opener on Saturday. District 2 champion Portsmouth topped Continental 14-4 in the second game of the tournament’s opening round. Cranston Western beat Cumberland National 10-1 in the other game.
Continental, the District 3 champion, dropped into the loser’s bracket, where it was scheduled to play Cumberland National on Monday, with results unavailable at press time. Cranston Western is playing Portsmouth in the winner’s bracket final, which was also set for Monday.
With a win Monday, Continental would play again on Tuesday for a spot in the championship round.
Apponaug splits first two at Cal Ripken
Apponaug’s 10-year-old all-stars qualified for the Cal Ripken New England Regional by finishing second at the state tournament, joining state champ and host team CLCF in the regional tourney.
Apponaug dropped its opener at the regional on Saturday, falling to Berwick, Maine. On Sunday, though, Apponaug stayed alive with a 12-7 win over Hartford, Vt.
That victory set up a rematch with rival CLCF, which was scheduled for Monday. Results were unavailable at press time.
50/70 squad drops first two at regional
Warwick’s first 50/70 all-star team, a joint effort of Continental and West Side is representing Rhode Island at the Little League Intermediate Division East Regional in New York.
The Warwick squad knew it would face an uphill battle against teams who have played in the new division for longer, and it’s been just what the team expected. Warwick held its own in its opener, losing 12-6 to Maryland on Friday. On Sunday, Pennsylvania cruised to a 23-2 victory.
Warwick was scheduled to play its third pool-play game on Monday with its fourth and final match-up set for Tuesday against Massachusetts.
