PEDESTRIAN STRUCK

Two vehicles struck a woman pedestrian crossing Warwick Avenue in the area of St. Timothy’s Church early evening on Wednesday, January 4.

According to Captain Rick Rathbun, the woman was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries but was recently upgraded to stable condition. She was trying to cross Warwick Avenue towards the Jamestown Apartments and reach the bus stop. Police directed and diverted traffic during the busy after-work travel period while the pedestrian was transported, the accident was cleared and the site investigated.

While the accident reconstruction continues, no citations have been issued. Impaired driving due to alcohol and drugs has been ruled out for both operators. Streetlights were on but darkness had set in with the early sunset. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. Pedestrians may be cited for failing to follow traffic laws, but the woman who was struck has not been cited.

The Warwick Police Department reminds pedestrians to utilize lighted crosswalks and signals at intersections for their own safety. STATE POLICE ARREST

On January 5, 2017, members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force arrested Dylan Harris, age 25, of 159 Camp Street, Third Floor, Providence, for indecent solicitation of a minor (2 counts); disseminating indecent material to a minor; possession of cocaine; attempted assault with a deadly weapon; and eluding. The arrest stems from an accident at Winslow Park off Airport Road. The suspect attempted to outrun police in an SUV, which crashed and rolled over in the facility parking lot. FAILING TO SIGNAL

Officer Michael Harris conducted a motor vehicle stop near the Mickey Stevens Sports Complex after a driver, stopped at a red light on Warwick Avenue in the area of Sandy Lane, completed a right turn without signaling on December 30 around 1:29 p.m. Harris noted a U.S. Marine Corps badge affixed to the rear license plate of the vehicle obscured his vision of the plate. Jaritza Henriquez, 19, of Providence, the driver, stated she had done nothing wrong and that she had, but was not carrying, a R.I. permit to operate a vehicle. While her passenger had an active license, a check on Henriquez showed no active permits. It also revealed a bench warrant for failing to appear at a pre-trial conference dated November 23, 2016.

Officer Boardman responded to a request for a second unit, and Henriquez was taken into custody without incident. She was issued two violations, one for driving without first obtaining a license and another for turn signal required and no insurance, first offense. She was transported to the ACI to await a court appearance on the bench warrant. SHOPLIFTING

Janel Lea, 40, of North Kingstown, will be charged with one count of shoplifting-misdemeanor, after placing a TV, rug and tools, valued at $621.31, in her cart and leaving the Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road on Dec. 29 without paying for the items. She was approached by Walmart Asset Protection staff, which recovered the items.

Officer Mark Jandreau arrived on the scene after being alerted by dispatch that a woman who had been shoplifting got into a blue Ford Taurus and was leaving the lot on the Toys R Us side. Jandreau stopped the vehicle in front of the Flower Box, across from Toys R Us.

The driver said he was just giving his friend a ride to Walmart and that he had not gotten out of the car or entered the store, and had no idea she was going to steal from the store. Lea stated that she knew the vehicle had been pulled over because she “stole from Walmart” and stated that she did not take any of the merchandise and had left it all behind. Officer Jandreau escorted Lea to his police vehicle. She was placed in the rear of the vehicle, awaiting Officer Jill Marshall to arrive for a patdown. The operator and the vehicle were released from the scene.

Sergeant Charles Boisseau requested Walmart Asset Protection respond to the scene, and they positively identified Lea as the subject whom they observed shoplifting from Walmart. Lea was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters, where she was processed. The Walmart Asset Protection staff said the merchandise had been recovered, was undamaged and will be resold. Walmart will press charges, as well as trespass her from Walmart.

On Dec. 27, Parrish Raymond Williams, 50, of Pawtucket, was charged with shoplifting-felony and habitual offender-shoplifting after he was observed by Walmart Asset Protection staff concealing nine pairs of bed sheets in a tote in a cart and passing all points of sale without making an attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise. A Walmart associate approached Williams outside the store and recovered the merchandise, valued at $475.32. The associate told police that Walmart wished to press charges and trespass Williams from the premises. Williams was transported to Warwick Police Department Headquarters, where he was held to be transported to Third District Court.

Officers Matthew Higgins and Jonathan Reiff were called to the AT&T store at 1800 Post Road to take a report from an employee and a store manager who stated that on Dec. 28 a white man in his mid-30s, wearing blue sneakers, jeans and a hooded sweatshirt, entered the store looking at the ZTE Maven and Samsung Galaxy Express Prime cell phones, setting off two alarms. When the employee approached the man, he tried to reattach both phones in an attempt to discontinue the alarm. While the employee was with another customer, the man left the store. The employee said the customer he was helping seemed uneasy, was speaking in a loud tone, and seemed to be acting erratically. About 10 minutes after the customer left the store, the employee noticed the two phones were missing. The employee believes the customer left in an older navy blue Buick. Both phones were entered into NCIC as stolen. The case was forwarded to detectives for follow-up.

EMBEZZLEMENT

On December 22, Shonte Brown, 18, was charged with two counts of felony embezzlement/fraudulent conversion after Macy’s loss prevention staff provided security camera footage from Dec. 20, on which Brown appeared to take two $100 bills and a roll of quarters ($10) from the register. Loss Prevention staff also indicated that while Brown was logged into Macy’s registers on three separate occasions, two $100 bills, then a single $100 bill and then six $20 bills were missing. All incidents were captured on security camera footage. When questioned by police, Brown stated the facts were true. She was taken into custody, advised of her rights, and transported to headquarters

 LOST OR STOLEN PHONES

A woman shopping at Old Navy at Warwick Mall contacted police when she was unable to find her rose gold iPhone 7 after checking the area. Officer Sokphannareth Chea watched surveillance footage in which the victim was observed placing her phone on a shelf while waiting outside a fitting room while her child was trying on clothes. She was then observed talking to a man and then walking away from the phone. The officer also observed a man wearing a gray sweater approach the shelf, grab the phone, look left and right, then, when another male blocked the view, conceal the phone and walk away from the area. The victim stated she wanted to file a complaint, and the officer requested that Old Navy provide a copy of the surveillance footage. The phone was entered into NCIC as stolen. The suspect is a black man, 5’10” to 6’1” tall, with black hair and a black beard.

Police were dispatched to the parking lot of Thayer Arena on Dec. 28 at approximately 12:16 p.m. for a report of a lost or stolen cell phone. The reporting party stated she’d left her residence at 9:40 a.m. with her rose gold-colored iPhone 7 (valued at $700) in a blue case with flowers. She said she stopped at Stop & Shop on Warwick Avenue and arrived at work at approximately 10 a.m. She said realized at 10:30 a.m. that her phone was not in her pocket and returned to Stop & Shop, but they did not have her phone. She said she thoroughly checked her vehicle and house and did not locate the phone. She said that by using the Find My iPhone app, she originally received a signal in the area of Thayer Arena ice rink. However, an updated check revealed a specific address, but there was no answer at the door. Police contacted the residents of the house, who said no one had been in the house since the occupants left for work that morning. Police advised the victim that Find My iPhone only offers a range to pinpoint the phone’s location and that if she could provide a serial number, the phone would be entered into NCIC as stolen.

DISPATCH LEADS TO MARIJUANA SUMMONS

On Dec. 23 at 10:18 p.m., Sergeant John Choquette and Officer Sokphannareth Chea were dispatched to 2043 Elmwood Avenue for a report that a male and a female were verbally arguing. It was determined that no crime had occurred, it was just a verbal argument. Officers conducted checks on both parties and learned that the female subject, Kimberly Faria, 49, of Central Falls, had an active bench warrant out of the Third District Court for a failure to appear for payment. Faria was transported to Warwick Police Headquarters, where she was processed. Officers conducted an inventory of Faria’s purse and located a green leafy substance in a plastic bag that tested positive for marijuana in a field test. It weighed about 3.1 grams and was tagged as evidence. Faria was issued a summons for possession of marijuana, 1 ounce or less.

On Dec. 23, Officer Barlow responded to the Villa del Rio Apartments, 311 Greenwich Avenue, for a check the condition call. An occupied red Chevy that appeared damaged and contained two people was parked in the rear of the parking lot. Officer Parillo, who was the primary officer dispatched, noted that the registered owner of the vehicle, Casey Nelson, 26, had a hold without bail warrant for her arrest. Barlow observed the vehicle and that it appeared to be lived in and was running. Nelson stated that she and her boyfriend were currently homeless and that they have been sleeping in the vehicle. The vehicle was secured in the lot, and Nelson was taken into custody for the warrant. The officer observed several folding knives in the front passenger seat and asked the male occupant to step from the vehicle. A pat search produced a wallet with an Arizona driver’s license for Stephen Rogers, 33. The license was checked through RI DMV. Rogers had a bench warrant for failure to appear on a Larceny charge, with the original arresting agency being the Richmond Police Department. Rogers and Nelson were transported to Warwick Police Headquarters. Both were processed and later transported to Kent County Courthouse, Nelson for arraignment and Rogers for handling of his court matters.
