A Cranston 2-year-old died last week in an apparent drowning after falling into a swimming pool.

Emergency officials responded to 51 Mallory Court shortly before 2 p.m. on July 3 and found Jayce Sherman-Chattelle unresponsive, according to Cranston Police. He was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where he passed away.

“On behalf of Mayor Allan W. Fung and the Cranston Police Department, our sincere condolences are extended to the family,” reads a statement from Cranston Police, who said the investigation of the incident remains ongoing.

The community has rallied behind Jayce’s family through an online fundraising campaign set up on YouCaring.com. The page can be found at www.

youcaring.com/memorial-fundraiser/jayce-sherman-chattelle/199070.

As of Monday morning, the campaign had raised $8,120 toward its $10,000 goal. The funds will go to Jayce’s mother, Karla Sherman.

“A tragedy caused this precious gift from god to become an angel. Words cannot express what the family is going through coping with the loss of their son. I wish nothing more than for them to grieve and heal without the thought of the financial aspects that any loved one should not have to stress over during a difficult time such as this. Thank you for all your support,” writes Jessica Laliberte, the organizer of the campaign, in a message on the site.
