Colonel Michael J. Winquist, Chief of Police, announces the arrest of Martin Abreu, age 28, of 96 Lawrence Street, Cranston, who was taken into custody following the execution of multiple search warrants on two locations in the City of Cranston (96 Lawrence Street and 99 Old Oak Ave, 1st floor and basement) and one location in the Town of North Providence (8 Packard Street). During the investigation special investigations detectives observed Abreu engage in multiple hand-to-hand transactions consistent with drug activity. In addition, the detectives documented multiple controlled purchases of alleged fentanyl and heroin from Abreu over the past month.

Fentanyl is a potent opioid that is approximately 80-100 times more potent than morphine and approximately 40-50 times more potent than heroin. Fentanyl has been linked to many of the overdoses throughout the State of Rhode Island. During the raid, over 50 grams of fentanyl were seized along with over 40 grams of heroin, 6.6 grams of crack cocaine, and 2.8 grams of cocaine. In addition to the narcotics, $4000.00 United States currency believed to be proceeds derived from the illegal sales of narcotics and two flat screen televisions were seized. A firearm was also seized from the address in North Providence.

Abreau, who has been previously convicted of a narcotics related charge, will be arraigned at Cranston Police Department Headquarters and subsequently held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institution on the following violations of Rhode Island General Law:

1 count of Possession with Intent to Deliver a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance

2 counts of Possession with intent to Deliver a Schedule 2 Controlled Substance

1 count of Possession of a Schedule 2 Controlled Substance

1 count of Possession of a Schedule 4 Controlled Substance

Regarding this arrest, Colonel Winquist stated, “Abreu’s arrest and the seizure of both heroin and fentanyl have eliminated an alleged distribution operation in our City. We, as a police department, will continue to make removing the Fentanyl and Heroin from our neighborhoods a priority and will dedicate whatever resources are necessary to accomplish this goal.”

Detectives from the Cranston Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit conducted the investigation with the assistance of members of the Department’s Patrol Division. Detectives from the Rhode Island State Police, North Providence Police Department, and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force assisted with this investigation. In addition, a member of the Cranston Police Department’s K-9 Unit assisted with the search. This collaborative effort enabled the Cranston Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation across jurisdictional boundaries.
