Cranston Senior Services partners with Aspiera Medical for study of shingles ointment

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “almost one out of three people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime.”

And, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), shingles usually affects adults after age 50, although it can strike at any age.

“In the U.S., the incidence of shingles is actually increasing,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cohen, an infectious disease researcher at NIH. “If you live to be 85 years old, you have a 50 percent chance of getting shingles.”

With these statistics in mind, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Senior Services Executive Director Sue Stenhouse are pleased to announce a partnership with Aspiera Medical to study the effects of their Terrasil Shingles Skincare Ointment on those diagnosed with shingles in the state of Rhode Island. The study is also being conducted simultaneously with shingles patients living in Baltimore, Md.

The goal of this particular study is to document clinical evaluation of the Terrasil Shingles Skincare Ointment. The information will enable Aspiera Medical to establish additional statistically valid responses on the effects of the product from patient use.

The study design is simple and confidential. Anyone in the state of Rhode Island with a confirmed case of shingles can enroll. There is an easy, brief questionnaire to complete on a daily basis for four weeks. Upon enrolling, the patient will receive the Terrasil Shingles Ointment at no charge throughout the study period (a $40 value per jar). All information shared is compiled by the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center medical team, which is also available to assist with questions and enrollment.

David Goldsmith, co-founder and director of Aspiera Medical, said, “Approximately 40,000 individuals throughout the world have already benefited from the company’s shingles ointment. As a Rhode Island company, we are thrilled to be partnering with Cranston Senior Services to make our shingles skincare ointment available to those suffering from this often painful skin ailment.”

“Once again it gives me great pleasure to see the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center take the lead in issues concerning the health of our elderly residents,” Fung said. “I am proud to support Aspiera Medical’s efforts to combat the effects of shingles, an affliction affecting the senior population in Cranston and around the state. I’d like to thank Director Stenhouse and David Goldsmith, co-founder and director of Aspiera Medical, for providing this opportunity to those in need.”

“The Cranston Senior Services staff is proud to be collaborating in this statewide study – fulfilling one of the designated missions of the center, which is to help in research efforts affecting the elder population,” Stenhouse said. “Our center is accessible and conveniently located in a centralized location for patients to receive information on this research study and product, designed to bring relief for those affected by shingles.”

Aspiera Medical is a division of Aidance Scientific, both headquartered in Woonsocket. The companies are rooted in over 10 years of research and product development with one purpose – to offer products that support faster healing for wounds, skin infections, dermatitis and other dermatological challenges, mostly marketed under the Terrasil brand family.
