Police have identified the victim in an apparent murder at the Farmington Terrace Apartments on Farmington Avenue in Cranston, while a missing vehicle is being sought and a man has reportedly been taken into custody for questioning in the case.
Police Chief Col. Michael Winquist said the body of John Fiore, 55, of 133 Farmington Ave., Apt. 4, was discovered in the apartment Tuesday morning after a relative came to check on his well being after not hearing from him for a few days. Fiore - the sole tenant of the apartment - had “visible injuries” that included stab wounds, according to the chief.
“At this time, it does appear to be a homicide,” he said.
Police are awaiting a formal determination of the cause of death from the state medical examiner’s office.
Winquist said police were called to the scene just before noon Tuesday. The relative got no answer at the victim's door, he said, and then enlisted the help of the building manager. They found the victim’s body upon entering the apartment.
The colonel said Fire Department personnel responded, and “based on the nature of the decedent, the situation that was observed … ended up calling the police.”
Winquist said police subsequently learned that the victim’s vehicle was missing, and had apparently been taken from the apartment building. The vehicle is a silver, four-door 2009 Chevrolet Impala, with Rhode Island registration F665.
The chief said police are seeking the public’s help in locating the vehicle. Anyone who sees it is advised not to approach, and to immediately call 911.
“We’re actively searching for that vehicle,” he said.
Winquist said the incident appears to be isolated.
“We don’t have any reason to believe that anyone’s in danger in this time,” he said.
Additionally, Cranston police late Tuesday reportedly took a man into custody for questioning in the case. The man is said to have fled on foot when Cranston police went to his home in Johnston, and he was later apprehended near the Citizens Bank on Killingly Street in Providence. Police have not released the man's identity, and the nature of his potential involvement in the matter is unclear.
The apparent murder would be the first homicide in Cranston in 2014.
