Crystal Bowersox on life after ‘Idol’

You don’t have to finish first on “American Idol” to enjoy a successful career in the music industry. Second place is just fine, if you have the talent and personality.

Crystal Bowersox has both, and you’ll have an opportunity to see for yourself when the Season 9 American Idol runner-up comes to Cranston’s Park Theatre on Saturday, November 8.

Bowersox has established herself as one of the most dynamic young voices in music today, thanks to her rich blend of blues, country, folk and rock.

I spoke to her from her home in Ohio, where she was concentrating on writing her own songs and preparing to host an upcoming workshop at the Malaysia Jazz Festival.

“’American Idol’ was a wonderful experience,” she said, “and I am grateful for the experience. Now I can do what I love, and that includes spending time with my five-year-old son and giving him a better life. I love writing songs, and I’m presently writing some songs for children. I play them for my son. He’s my test.”

Children play an important role in Crystal’s life. She is an advocate for the Children’s Congress and participates in Smart Kids, traveling to Washington, D.C. to talk with legislators about children’s issues and advocating for people with diabetes (She is a Type 2 diabetic).

Many entertainers are now holding meet and greet sessions with their fans, and Crystal is no exception. She takes the opportunity one step further.

“I enjoy getting to know my fans and try to be generous with my time by shaking everyone’s hand, taking photos and really talking with them,” she said. “I also do a short up-close-and-personal acoustic set with my guitar. I want to see how my music affects them.”

Crystal often travels with a band, but enjoys entertaining with a bass player in a more intimate setting. She plays piano, guitar and harmonica. While a singer of country songs, she sees herself as a singer of more than just that genre.

“Today, the world is my playground, and in the future I would love to expand into TV and theatre,” she said. Her most recent album, “All That For This,” peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Rock Chart.

Rhode Island’s own Erika Van Pelt, another “American Idol” finalist, will open for Bowersox.
