The Toll Gate and Pilgrim girls’ swim teams posted impressive showings at the Division III girls’ swim meet at Roger Williams University on Friday evening.

Smithfield, which dropped down from Division II to compete in the D-III meet, claimed top prize with a total of 368 points, while Toll Gate didn’t finish far behind in second with a total of 335 and Pilgrim placed fourth (229 points).

Both Warwick schools got out to strong starts when the Toll Gate 200 medley relay squad of Alyssa O’Keefe, Athena Sampalis, Wenona Alexander and Emma Seidenberg placed second to start the meet, and the Pilgrim quartet of Emily Diggle, Mackenzie Fraser, Fortune Premy and Tessa Seebeck earned third.

Toll Gate and Pilgrim performed well in the 200 individual medley that followed, as well, as Diggle (second) and Sampalis (third) each earned a medal for their respective schools.

After that, the Pats earned back-to-back first-place finishes.

Fraser took gold in the 50 free with a time of 26.45 seconds, before Premy followed with an impressive effort of her own, outpacing her competitors in the 100 fly in a time of 1:05.44.

Alexander of Toll Gate also medaled in the 100 fly, earning third with a time of 1:11.07.

Premy followed her golden performance by taking silver with a time of 1:01.30 in the 100 free.

The Titans earned a spot atop the podium next, when Alexander claimed first in the 500 free with a time of 5:54.44. Diggle wasn’t far behind, as she took third in the 500.

The 200 free relay followed and Toll Gate put forth a dominant showing, with Sampalis, O’Keefe, Seidenberg and Alexander earning gold with a time of 1:56.85.

Fraser followed her first-place effort in the 50 free by taking silver in the backstroke, and Sampalis grabbed her lone individual gold with a time of 1:16.22 in the 100 breaststroke.

Pilgrim closed the meet by taking second in the 400 free relay behind a strong swim from the team of Diggle, Fraser, Premy and Seebeck.

Smithfield would ultimately prevail, but the Titans were awarded a runner-up trophy, and they were also recognized as the D-III dual meet champions after posting a flawless record of 6-0.

The girls’ state swim championship will be held at Brown University on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Hawks earn D-I crown

The Hendricken swim team cruised to its third consecutive Division I championship on Sunday at Roger Williams University.

The Hawks came into Sunday after posting a 7-1 record during the dual meet season, second behind undefeated Barrington.

Hendricken was able to overpower the Eagles, however, compiling a total of 506 points – defeating Barrington (392) by more than 100 points.

The division title was Hendricken’s 16th in the last 17 years.

The defending state champion will be back in action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Brown University, when Hendricken will try to capture its third straight state title and 30th in school history.
