The Pilgrim and Toll Gate football teams ran into the cream of the crop in Division III over the weekend, and the difference between Middletown, Classical and the rest of the league came through loud and clear.

The Islanders ran for five touchdowns in taking a 37-0 lead at halftime over the Pats. Ygor Maipira scored twice, as did Jacob Francis, and Middletown got scores from Rajae Messam, Kyle Donovan and James Forsythe.

Pilgrim’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 50-yard run from Owen Kelly.

Toll Gate, meanwhile, lost 33-14 to the Purple. The score was 7-7 in the first quarter and just 13-7 in favor of Classical at halftime, but a 12-point burst in the third quarter put the game out of reach.

Sean Vann had a 60-yard touchdown run for Toll Gate, while Dan Smith found the end zone from 2 yards out. Classical’s Gayee Myers scored twice.

Middletown is now 5-0 in D-III, while Classical is 4-1. Toll Gate is 1-4, and Pilgrim is 2-3.

The Titans and Pats won’t both go winless this weekend, as they’re squaring off against each other at Toll Gate on Saturday at 1 p.m.

’Canes build playoff

momentum

It wasn’t a win, but it was one of the Warwick Vets boys’ soccer team’s best showings of the season.

The ’Canes tied first-place Davies 2-2 on Thursday to finish 1-0-3 in their last four games. Vets got goals from Brad Robert and Sebastian Rasmussen. Ryan Costa had 12 saves.

Robert’s goal came with just 20 seconds left in the game, on a header.

The outcome was just the third all season that wasn’t a win for Davies, as they’re 11-1-2. Vets finished the regular season in ninth place in Division III at 6-5-3.

The preliminary round of the postseason is scheduled for today, though brackets haven’t officially been released yet.

Playoff time

Vets isn’t the only boys’ soccer team in city preparing for the playoffs, as both Toll Gate and Hendricken will be opening their postseasons this week as well.

On the girls’ side, Toll Gate and Pilgrim will begin postseason play on Wednesday, while field hockey teams Warwick Vets and Pilgrim are getting the playoffs underway as well.
