(True-to-life

disaster film)

We’ve seen a lot of disaster movies, but none that brought us right into the action like “Deepwater Horizon.” Based on the actual offshore oil rig explosive disaster of April 20, 2010, the movie recreates in detail the events leading up to the fateful day, the full terror of the day, and the aftermath.

Marc Wahlberg is at his best as Chief Electrical Technician Mike, who comes through as the ordinary man thrust in an extraordinary situation. We learn much about BP’s investment in this major project, its cutting corners to stay on time and in budget, and the conflict between opposing theories on how to do the job. While there is some finger-pointing, preparations center around everyone doing their job without compromising the “big picture.”

The project is 43 days behind schedule. People are getting nervous. Pressure tests are being taken with conflicting results. The cloud of impending doom hangs over the monster in the middle of the ocean.

When the Mayday alarm is finally sounded, all hell breaks loose. We witness an incredible recreation of the disaster as people attempt to stop the oil flow, contain the fires, and eventually jump into the water to save their lives.

The aftermath, where photos and names of the 11 men who lost their lives plus the actual men and women rescued, is goose-bump chilling. If this movie doesn’t stop to make you think, nothing will.

Rated PG 13, with some scenes of the disaster that are difficult to watch.
