(Explicit Teen Sexual Awakening)
“Diary of a Teenage Girl” has more explicit sexual scenes than “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
While “Fifty Shades” was aimed at an adult audience, “Diary,” by the lure of its title, is aimed at an audience too young to qualify to see the R-rated sexual romp of a 15-year-old immature girl.
Played by 23-year-old Bel Powley, Minnie opens the movie by declaring, “I had sex today.”
The problem is that she had it with her 30-something mother’s boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard).
The movie takes place in San Francisco in the early ’70s when free sex and drugs were the daily activities of many, including Minnie’s mother (Kristen Wiig), who ironically works in a library until she is fired.
Minnie and Monroe romp frequently in his apartment and on a boat. Mom doesn’t have a clue, or doesn’t want to have a clue.
Minnie is a wannabee artist who draws explicit pictures and records everything. Everything! You know that mom is going to find the tapes sooner or later.
At 15, Minnie smokes, drinks, does drugs, and has hetero and homosexual sex at the drop of a hat.
The movie has been praised by many critics for its “honesty,” and that it is, until the unrealistic redemption and reconciliation ending.
Joyce won’t go see any movie with “teenage” in the title, but the title and the Internet chatter are attracting young teenagers who wouldn’t think of seeing “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Rated a very big R with nudity galore, plus an overabundance of sex, profanity, drug use, drinking, and we even get to see Minnie vomit.
