David J. Davitt, age 89, a resident of the Village of Willows Crossing in Mansfield, formerly of Warwick, RI, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Monday, December 5, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Carol (Pelkey) Davitt, to whom he was wed for sixty-three years.

Born in Boston, MA on July 23, 1927, he was a loving son of the late Santo and Nerini (Pirini) Davitti. David grew up in Dorchester. His family later moved to Providence where he was a graduate of Classical High School and attended classes at Rhode Island School of Design. During the Korean War he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on November 21, 1951 with the rank of Private First Class.

Mr. Davitt had made his home in Mansfield for the past year and formerly resided in Warwick for most of his life. He was a retired machine designer and had worked for twenty years at Leesona while the company was located in Warwick. He also worked at the Leviton Company in Warwick, at the Entwistle Company in East Greenwich, and also as a professional photographer at Loring Studios in Providence. David was a former member of the Hillsgrove United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Warwick. David was a person who had the ability to fix just about anything. His hobbies included photography, automotive repair, exercising and walking, but most of all he loved he loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted daughters Susan Darling and her husband George of Marietta, PA and Linda Byrne and her husband Kevin of Foxboro. He was the dear brother of the late Alan Davitt, and is also survived by his adoring grandchildren Casey Horan and SPC Geoffrey Byrne, U.S. Army.

His funeral service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday, December 9th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.

Visitation will be held prior to services on Friday morning beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00 A.M. at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI.

In lieu of flowers, David’s family would prefer that donations in his memory be made to Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley St., West Bridgewater, MA 02379.
