Defenders of our veterans

To the Editor:

This past December, Jessica Botelho and the Warwick Beacon ran a small story titled, "Resolution for disabled veterans takes plunge." (Warwick Beacon 12/15/2011) The article covered a resolution for a year membership discount at McDermott Pool on Sandy Lane.
I wish to extend a sincere thank you to Mayor Avedisian, Councilwoman Camille Vella-Wilkinson and the Warwick City Council, for the successful passing of this resolution that would support veterans with disabilities access to the pool at a discounted rate. As commander of the Disabled American Veterans, I am thankful for the appreciation and support from our local communities in this great city.
Currently, the Veterans Administration does not have an aquatics therapy program. Many of our veterans suffer from arthritis due to back and joint injuries caused by their time of service. As they get older, this can make it painfully impossible to maintain a physically, healthy lifestyle. Therefore, with the legislation introduced by Councilwoman Vella-Wilkinson, the citizens within the city of Warwick demonstrated they are true defenders of our veterans.
I now encourage all veterans with disabilities to check out the McDermott Pool for a low annual rate of $80. The hours are very accommodating and the staff always helpful.
