Denise M. (Maciel) Walker

Denise M. (Maciel) Walker, 58, passed peacefully at home on February 21, 2013 surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She has been the bride of Mr. Steve Walker of Warwick for more than 34 joyful years.

Denise grew up in East Providence and was the daughter of the late Anthony H. and Sarah M. “Sally” (Oliver) Maciel. Mrs. Walker was a teacher in Warwick for the past 27 years and retired last October. Denise was proud to be a teacher at Greenwood School for the last 23 years and loved her job and her students dearly. She was a National Board Certified Teacher who participated in numerous education enhancing initiatives. She was also an avid seamstress, walker and golfer and a member of the Pine Valley Couples Golf Association for more than 25 years. Denise was a dedicated parishioner and choir member at St. Rose and Clement Church for 30 years. She had an amazing zest for life, an infectious positive attitude, and was loved by all. She will be missed by her family as well as her wonderful friends and countless past students whose lives she touched.

In addition to her husband; she is survived by two daughters: Julie Walker and Dan Burden of Stonington, Conneticut and Sarah Simpkins and her husband, Allen of Warwick. She is also the proud Nana of Ms. Drew Simpkins and devoted mother to her beloved dog, Gabby. She is also survived by her sisters Lori Maciel and Diane Patterson of East Providence, her brother Glenn Maciel of Seekonk, Massachusetts and many extended family members. She was the daughter-in-law of Margaret “Joan” (Hodgson) Walker of Warwick and the late Robert Walker. She was the and the sister of the late Bruce Maciel.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in SS. Rose and Clement Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Monday, February 25 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Interment in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, Johnston will be private.
