Leave it to Warwick Neck School first grade teachers Amy Dolan and Tracy Mollock to come up with a lesson that combines a bit of creative writing, public speaking, the latest technology and feelings of the heart. They had their students make valentines for their parents, but instead of cards the messages of endearment were delivered on a computer thumb drive in the form of a video. They got things going by giving the students a “sentence starter” and having them complete the phrase on the computer. To set the mood of the occasion, printouts were made on pink paper. The students were then videoed while reading what they had written in front of a “green screen.” This, as they learned, enabled them to be videoed in front of a background of their choosing. The thumb drives were introduced at the beginning of the school year. Dolan and Mollock use them regularly as portfolios for student work. In those instances where parents didn’t provide the drives, the teachers made them available themselves. Seen in front of her video valentine is Marcella Leberon. Standing with their valentine phrases are Abigail Killilea, Cameron Mulcahey, Julia Smith, Sadie Hicknott and Christopher Webster. Seated are Brendan Lema, Patrick Rowe, Laylani Pereyra, Limmian Roche and Taylor Tatarian.
