Dining in style at Scandinavion Home

Assisted living facilities and nursing homes have come a long way since I used to visit my grandmother. “Fine dining” was not a term associated with the facilities.

Well, the times, they have changed, and a meal at Cranston’s Scandinavian Home (and many other Rhode Island facilities) has become an enjoyable, nutritious and delectable dining experience.

I joined my wife, who had worked nights for 20 years at the Scandinavian home, on a luncheon and tour of the newly renovated assisted living and nursing home, along with a dozen former employees.

The dining room is decorated in the fashion of a first class restaurant, with comfortable chairs, plenty of elbowroom, large windows overlooking the grounds and patio, and friendly waitpersons.

Executive Director Chris Woulfe informed us that we were eating the same meal that was prepared that day for the residents.

Fresh rolls were on the table as a crisp salad with choice of dressing arrived.

The main meal, traditionally served at lunch, was chicken breast. This was not your ordinary chicken breast. Broiled to perfection, tender and juicy, it was accompanied by a thick brown gravy with mushrooms, homemade mashed potatoes and fresh peas and onions. Dessert was a yummy carrot cake.

The chef and Sousse chef were both Johnson & Wales graduates, who like many J & W grads are finding opportunities in health care facilities that pay attention to healthy and quality dining.

The Scandinavian Home has moved into the 21st century, offering three quality meals a day, plus snacks and special dining opportunities, including late afternoon cocktails.

We have come a long way in providing comfortable, caring, communities for seniors. And yes, there is a fitness center to work off the carrot cake.
