Disappearing wall

In response to concerns that sections of a Warwick Neck stonewall that was once part of the Aldrich Estate are disappearing, city officials and representatives of the Grenier Group that is building the 7-unit Cottages at Aldrich development met yesterday. Under the regulations for the development and in compliance with the Historic District Commission, Grenier was permitted to make openings in the wall for the housing development. However, in recent weeks there have been reports that stones elsewhere on the wall are disappearing and, that in fact, some are being used on the houses. According to Ward 5 Councilman Ed Ladouceur and Trish Reynolds of the Planning Department, Grenier will submit a plan and timetable for repairs to the wall. He is also to provide an inventory of stone removed for the openings. Ladouceur is hopeful that restoration of the wall can be completed soon, as he believes that will discourage further theft. Seen here are Ladouceur, who met with area resident Jane Austin on Tuesday prior to the meeting yesterday with city officials and the developer.
