Dog days of summer

Well, it’s officially the dog days of summer. They started July 3 and end Aug. 11. And what better place to enjoy them than the dog park at City Park, one of the state’s first. Year-round, the park gets visitors from across the state and as pet owners will attest, their dogs know just where they are going and whine and bark in anticipation of their arrival. “It’s a nice relaxing atmosphere,” says Tony Bagaglia of Greenville, who usually brings two dogs to the park. Among the regulars yesterday was Tom Javor of Warwick and his Gordon Setter, Olin. Asked what could be done to make the park even better, Javor and others put water on top of the list. There is no running water at the park. They also suggested watering the park because it can become a “dust bowl,” and providing some high shelving along the fencing at the entrance where people could place items out of a dog’s reach. As for attributes of the park, there was unanimity that it gives dogs the chance to exercise and, equally important, socialize. (Warwick Beacon photos)
