Don't let hate win

The result of the presidential election has a deeper issue we all need to acknowledge. We are not happy with the choices our government is making. We may differ in what we want, but we all want something else – change. I think that is unanimous across the country. We all want the world to be a better place, but it starts with ourselves. Neither presidential candidate represented the kind of change I wanted, therefore I respectfully declined to cast a ballot for either of the two major candidates for president and instead wrote one in. Many are afraid that with the election of Donald Trump, hate will win. Look at the history of America to be reassured – hate will not win.

Our government was created by the people for the people. We have a system of checks and balances that will not be destroyed. Even Lincoln was hated in his time by white Democrats who were the southern slave owners. There was a civil war and states threatening to leave the union, but in the end hate did not win. The United States came out stronger and gave rights to those who were once denied them – it was progress and this is just one of the many examples in American history of hate not winning. Although the history of America is not always pretty or fair, the American people do not let hate win. Those who are afraid that hate will win because Trump was elected president have lost faith in the American people, not the government. You are in control. Tell your kids they can make a difference in the world no matter who the president is. Everyone can make a difference, even if it is small.

In the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. a very inspirational quote from Martin Niemöller is posted. It reads, “First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out – Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.” We live in America where we can take action. Not being violent or burning American flags, but standing up for your beliefs and showing the world that the American people care and will not let hate win.

For those who support President-elect Trump and have some of his same ideals, and for those who eagerly wait to oppose him at every turn, remember – we are all Americans, but more importantly we are all people. We all come into this world the same way and we all have the same ending. Let's make the time in between as enjoyable for all as we can. I know I try to and I will continue to do so and hope others will too. Don’t answer hate with hate. Hate will not win if we don’t let it. Briana Crowley
