Dorothy F. (Higgins) Mullen, 82, passed away on December 23, 2013, at her home. She was the wife of the late Walter F. Mullen.

Born in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Theodore S. Higgins and Dorothy M. (Stevens) Higgins, step-daughter of the late Helena E. Higgins; and sister of the late Theodore S. Higgins, Jr.

Mrs. Mullen was an Educator for 35 years and retired from the Warwick School System in 1988. A dedicated professional, she taught English to recent immigrants who wished to be proficient and good Americans. She was an expert in Braille and transcribed and printed thousands of books from her home for school children and adult readers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She was a volunteer at INSIGHT and the R.I. Braille Transcription Center. An animal lover and supporter, Dot was a Champion breeder of Beagles.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Fourth Avenue, East Greenwich. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. in The Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95).
